Test your Body Image Satisfaction

Body image is your opinion of how you look, and usually has very little to do with how you actually look. Does your body image really have an influence on the quality of your life?
Facts about Body Image
Poor body image often lowers self-esteem – studies tell us that as much as a third of your self-esteem is tied into what you think and believe about how your body looks. If you don’t like your body it’s difficult for you to like the person who lives there.
Your feelings of manliness or femininity can change your sense of being acceptable as a person.
If you can’t accept your looks you often assume others can’t either and this can lead to feelings of self-consciousness in social situations, and ultimately isolation and loneliness. It can also have a negative impact on your ability to give and receive sexual intimacy.
Negative body image is often intertwined with depression.
Changes in normal eating patterns due to a desire to change the size or shape of the body can lead to eating disturbances; this can gradually lead to health- and life-threatening disorders.
Body image is unique to each individual, and is different again for men and women.
Thomas Cash developed a series of tests to help you get clear about how you feel about your body – this is the Body Areas Satisfaction Test.
Take the Test
How satisfied are you with each area of your body? Score each of the items below according to this scale, then total them up.
1 Very dissatisfied 2 Mostly dissatisfied 3 Neutral 4 Mostly satisfied 5 Very satisfied
1. Face (features, complexion)
2. Hair (colour, thickness, texture)
3. Lower torso (buttocks, hips, thighs, legs)
4. Mid torso (waist, stomach)
5. Upper Torso (chest or breasts, shoulders, arms)
6. Muscle tone
7. Weight
8. Height
What my score means
Less than 22 –Very Low
23-25 – Low - Low scores could reflect that you’re overly critical of your looks. Cash says your body is a moving target for your discontent and one thing you’re unhappy about, such as your weight, can spillover to any body area that you think is especially ‘fat’.
26-27 – Average: there’s something about your body you’re not happy with.
28-32 – High: you’re in the 20% of women who actually like their body. Men especially tend to evaluate their looks this way; this can prevent the pain of self-criticism but might also stop you from enjoying your best features.
More than 32 – very high – excellent, long may it continue. Likely you’re a high achiever in other areas of your life as well.
