Yo, These Commercials are Mocking You Man: 10 Commercials That Use Hip Hop to Pimp Their Product

Blatant marketing using hip hop has become a standard in the advertising world. Fast food giants, cereal companies, and several beverage companies seem to think a rap song and a few choice phrases will make everyone like them more. Call them out on it, look beyond the sold out singers, the product is the same old thing.

Imagine a board room full of stuffed suits making the decision to use parts of the hip hop culture as a way to sell products is a little disturbing. They must have to consult their 'homeboys" to find out how to relate to the young in order to relieve them of their cash. Plug in some new music, a few dance moves, apparel and choice phrases to let them appear to be the must have item of the moment, when it works. When it doesn't you end up with examples like the following ten commercial clips.

1.Burger King. Sponge Bob Square Butt, really? What makes this commercial even more disturbing is that it is used as marketing for a Happy Meal. I'm wondering where the executives brains were when they decided to pair up Sponge Bob Square Pants, creepy old Burger King man dancing with young women with the phrase, "Booty is booty." Apparently this ad is no longer running on TV.

2.Taco Bell. The drive thru rap features two guys in their car, rapping their order. They ask, "Did you get all that?" The Taco bell employees fire back with their own rap, and beat boxing. The commercial ends with one guy telling the other, "The Taco Bell girl just owned you."

3.McDonalds. The fast food giant has had several offenders over the years in an effort to "reach" the urban community. This particular commercial clip goes back a few years. It features the Chicken Nugget Rap song with little nuggets dressed up in their finest, gold chains and all, takes the prize. Ronald himself comes out to bust a move. Nothing quite like blatant stereotypes and unnecessary marketing techniques.

4.Dodge. This "parking lot playa" commercial preys on the urban culture, using hip hop phrases and playing up the lingo. This ad quickly annoys. Not trying to hide the blatant attempt at being hip and fresh. They attempt to throw in all sorts of stereotypical images to try to appeal to a certain market.

5.Evian. This commercial starts with the phrase "Let's observe the effect of Evian on your body" then quickly goes into the world of hip hop baby skaters. As a roller derby girl, I was admittedly smitten with the tricks these babies pulled off. Oh wait, those aren't actors are they? Evian is seemingly trying to change their image, appear more down to earth. Still, I do not expect to see a tough gang of teens hanging around a chain link fence with their Evian bottles anytime soon.

6.Vitamin Water. This 2010 commercial features an little fella with a pillow head, an enormous bottle of Vitamin Water and a pair of fishnet clad legs along with Pursuit of Happiness by Kid Cudi, remix by Steve Aoki. Mr. Pillow Head is talking about being a real man. Take off the snuggie and drink some Vitamin Water, he encourages the fellas while mixing in words and phrases like, "gots," "your lady ain't your mama" and "playa." Again, how does this apply to the product?

7.Bud Light. Bud Light followed their winning formula and came up with this 2010 Superbowl commercial that most likely cost the company more than a 6 pack to come up with and produce. Including T-pain and a key phrase, "pass dat quacamoleeeeeee makes this another hit for Bud Light, but is it just me, or does the whole thing seem very forced. 4 skinny white guys talking with an auto tune voice box planning a party around a single 6 pack. Hmm, oh well, pass dat guacamoleeee.

8.ShamWow. Um, wow. A 3 minute commercial that repeats the phrase, "You will say wow every time" approximately 10,000 times to a rap beat. Beyond annoying this commercial doesn't help Vince Offer, DJ Steve Porter, the random hip hop dancing girl or the Sham Wow product. It's a shame, wow. Check it out if you haven't seen it, but beware, this tune will get stuck in your brain.

9.Reese's Puff Cereal. Nothing subtle about this commercial. It has it all; a full rap song created for the cereal, hip hop clothing, dance moves and in your face attitude. Talk about unnecessary use of hip hop. I can picture the corporate executives critiquing the dance moves and trying to decide between different clothing choices, should they wear the skull pattern or the red bandanna?

10.Sprite. "Rhyme for Rhyme" commercial. Sprite is known for incorporating hip hop culture into their ads, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't work. This attempt isn't the worst I've seen, in fact it stays pretty true to form. My issue is that after so many attempts, they are starting to look desperate to look cool.
